WHS v Kapiti College (28/05/10)

After a poor shooting performance on Wednesday the boys were hoping to come out firing, and they did just that. Shooting 62% from the field, WHS looked like they were going to run away with the game. Kapiti obviously didn't like the idea of that and in their 3 month old gym really took it to us in the second half of the match.

Although we had no problems scoring, we struggled to adjust on defense. With 15 seconds left, WHS failed to foul to stop the clock and Kapiti hit a devistating jump shot to put them up by three points. Facing our first defeat of the season, the boys dug deep and showed the have the ability to step up when it counts with Sam Keller hitting a big three pointer to tie the game up with only seconds remaining. Kapiti failed to respond and WHS went into extra time having taken away all the momentem from the home team.

Extra time was a one sided affair with WHS outscoring Kapiti 16 points to 2 and remaining the only undeafeated team in the division with 6 wins from 6 matches. This win seals promotion for us and we will move up to Division 1 following our next game.

Turnovers really hurt us in this game which really kept Kapiti in the hunt. 29 turnovers is inexcusable and comes from what looks to be a lack of ball protection, something we will need to work on. Hamdi Yusuf followed up Wednesdays poor performance with a stunning effort scoring 30 points, 10 assists, 6 rebounds and 7 steals. Sam contributed 23 points with Dier also picking up 31 points to be the top scorer on the night. Dier also had a big dunk over two players in the second half. It was great to see all players take the court and play with passion and a lot of heart, this win really was a team effort.

WHS v Taita College (26/05/10)

This week saw the boys play a double header against two top four teams. Taita College on Wednesday followed by Kapiti College on Friday. Taita proved to be a very challenging team, but the boys didn't help themselves with a poor shooting performance. In one of our worst performances this year, we only managed to shoot 37% from the field, 15% from the 3 point line and 40% from the free throw line. Thes missed shots gave Taita plenty of opportunities to counter attack and we struggled on transition defense.

Sam keller top scored with 25 points as well as pulling down 18 rebounds, while Dier Makoii added 23 points and slammed home a momentum changing dunk in the fourth quarter that led to our come from behind victory. Hamdi Yusuf made up for his poor shooting performance (1 from 16) with 8 steals and a three pointer putting us up 5 points with only seconds remaining. Jayden Smith had an excellent rebounding night pulling down 25 rebounds.

WHS v St Pat's Silverstream (21/05/10)

Just a quick update this evening due to a busy week. The senior boys played well in their latest match. Impressive performances all around, with Sam Keller top scoring with 28 points. Hamdi Yuduf added 26 points along with 8 assists, 8 rebounds and 9 steals for a man of the match performance.

WHS v Otaki College (14/05/10)

WHS were entering this game without two of their best players. Although Otaki were at the bottom of the table, it was still going to be a test to see how well the team could handle themselves without our normal depth.

As expected, WHS came out very agressive scoring an impressive 34 points in the first quarter. Hamdi Yusuf was leading the charge, receiving several well placed passes from returning point guard Tarquin Smith. Tarquin finished the game with 10 points and 6 assists which has been his best outing this season. He has really established himself as our leading point guard after Fridays game and seems to be growing with confidence in every match.

WHS v Paraparaumu (07/05/10)

After steam rolling Wellington Coll 'C' team last week, our game against Paraparaumu was probably going to be one of the harder games this round. Thankfully the boys game out strong scoring 20 points in the opening quarter thanks to some sharp shooting from Sam Keller and some big rebounds from Dier Makoii. Our intensity continued through the remainder of the game as we outscored Paraparaumu in all four quarters to win 77 - 54.
